Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH)

Water, Sanitation and Hygiene Activities

By delivering sustainable water and sanitation solutions, we help build stronger, healthier communities where every individual especially the most vulnerable has the opportunity to thrive in a safe and dignified environment.

Providing access to adequate quantity and quality of water to refugees and returnees is one of GHDF’s priorities. Along with this responsibility, GHDF constructs and maintains sanitation facilities, ensures the water points are working properly, conducts hygiene promotion campaigns, and manages the waste in Reception Centers and Refugee Camps. These interventions are crucial to creating a clean and healthy environment, preventing diseases, and encouraging the best hygienic practices among the population.

Through GHDF’s integrated approach combining infrastructure development, community education, and partnership with key stakeholders, GHDF has contributed meaningfully to the improvement of living conditions for refugees across multiple sites. These efforts have reinforced public health outcomes and resilience in refugee communities.

  1. Water Supply Interventions

GHDF has made significant strides in improving access to clean and safe water for refugees vulnerable communities through strategic infrastructure development and partnerships.

Reception Centers

  • Refugees at reception centers have access to a minimum of 20 liters of water per person per day, aligning with international standards for emergency water supply.

Gatore Reception Center

  • GHDF connected a 300-meter water pipeline  water system, enhancing the reliability and quality of the water supply.

Bugesera Reception Center

  • A fully functional water treatment plant was constructed by GHDF in partnership with UNHCR. The facility now ensures a steady supply of clean water to the center’s population.

Overall Reach

  • In total, 60,140 individuals benefitted from GHDF’s water supply interventions in 2021
